Landscape and Heritage

Geo Smart Decisions provide a range of services to landscape and planning professionals. Experts in these fields are well accustomed to working with spatially referenced or geospatial data and our GIS consultants provide data management and analytical capabilities to support a range of applications in this field. GIS is an effective tool for assessing the potential visual and landscape impacts of proposed developments and, as such, GIS are experienced at using these data and tools to support the planning requirements of experts in this field.

As well as the analysis and providing the required figures to support reporting, GSD can also create online mapping tools and 3D visuals to support the work of our clients. A great deal of work was provided recently to landscape specialists in Wales’ Natural Resources Management, to understand the potential visual impacts of development proposals outside of Wales’ National Parks and other designated landscapes. Other work includes a recent collaboration with heritage and design experts to identify and map local heritage lists in the UK.

  • Visibility Assessment - Sensitive Landscapes

Zone of Theoretical Visibility (ZTV) mapping offers a model of the landscape surfaces that are visible from an observation point. It is often a very important aspect of the environmental planning process.

  • Understanding the impacts of climate change

Climate change has the potential to impact all forms of current day life, however it will also have a huge and, until now, unquantified impact upon historic, iconic and culturally significant sites across the UK. That is why GSD were contracted to partner with sustainability advisors to develop what has been called a “game changer” map, estimating the relative risks to countryside locations, monuments, coastlines and historical sites across the Wales, Northern Island and England.
